Hosting is one of those things nobody thinks about until the site is down and the phone is ringing.
I’ve moved a lot of clients off bad hosting over the years. Here’s what actually matters, and what doesn’t.
Figure Out What You Actually Need
Most small business sites need far less than they’re sold.
A normal brochure site, a few pages, a contact form? Shared hosting handles that fine. You do not need a dedicated server. Somebody will try to sell you one anyway.
The fastest sites I build now are static HTML, and those barely need hosting at all in the traditional sense. Worth knowing before you sign a three-year plan.
Can You Get a Human
This is the one I’d weight highest, and it’s the one people check last.
When something breaks, can you reach a person who can fix it? Not a chatbot. Not a ticket queue that answers in two business days. A person.
That’s most of what you’re paying for, whether the sales page says so or not.
Uptime and Speed
You want 99.9% uptime and pages that load fast. Both are easy to claim and harder to prove.
Look for reviews from people who’ve been there more than a month. The honeymoon reviews all look great.
Cheap hosting usually means they’ve packed as many sites as possible onto one machine. Your site is slow because of somebody else’s traffic, and there’s nothing you can do about it from your end.
Price, and the Part After the Price
The cheapest option is almost never the cheapest option.
Check what renewal costs, not the intro rate. Check what backups cost. Check what an SSL certificate costs, because it should be free and some hosts still charge for it. Check what it costs to leave.
That last one matters more than people think.
Ask Somebody Who’s Used It
Reviews on the host’s own site are marketing. Reviews on independent sites are better. Somebody in your industry who’s been on it two years is best.
What I’d Tell You Over Coffee
Pick the one with real support and honest pricing. Speed differences between decent hosts are small. The difference between a host that answers and one that doesn’t is enormous.
