These Aren’t Exotic Problems
The SEO horror stories online are all black-hat tactics and Google penalties. Scary stuff. But the SEO problems I actually see at small businesses are boring. And boring is good, because boring is fixable.
Here are the five I run into most.
1. No Clear Page Purpose
Every page should be about one thing. One. A page that crams your whole history and every service you offer into one long scroll ranks for nothing. Google has to know what a page is about before it decides who to show it to.
2. Titles and Meta Descriptions Left as Defaults
Most WordPress themes fill in your page titles and meta descriptions for you. Usually with your site name and the template name. If you’ve never gone in and written them yourself, Google is probably showing generic text in the search results where your pitch should be. This one’s a quick win. Most sites have never taken it.
3. Missing or Thin Blog Content
A website without a blog only ranks for its own name. That’s it. A blog is how you rank for the questions your customers are actually typing into Google. Without one, your SEO ceiling is low.
4. Slow Mobile Experience
I’ve said this in other posts. I’ll say it again. Mobile load time is a ranking factor. A site that crawls on a phone loses rankings and visitors at the same time.
5. No Location Signals for Local Businesses
If you serve a specific area and your site never says so, Google has no real reason to show you in local searches. Say it. Put it in your content, your titles, your footer. Adding location to your pages is one of the fastest local SEO wins there is.
