The Essential Elements of a Successful Website

Matte geometric tiles in navy, slate and off-white arranged into a modular grid, one cyan tile completing it.

A website that looks good and does nothing is a very expensive poster.

I’ve built and rebuilt a lot of these. The ones that actually work have the same five things in common, and none of them are design trends.

1. Content Somebody Can Actually Read

Write like you talk. Short paragraphs. Headings that tell people what’s coming so they can skip ahead.

Nobody reads a wall of text. They scan, they land on something useful, and then they read. Give them somewhere to land.

2. Navigation That Doesn’t Make People Think

If a visitor has to hunt for your phone number, you’ve already lost.

Menus should be obvious and boring. This is not the place to be clever. Boring navigation is a compliment.

3. It Has to Work on a Phone

More than half your visitors are on a phone. Probably more than that, depending on your business.

If they have to pinch and zoom to read your prices, they’re gone before you knew they showed up. This stopped being optional a long time ago.

4. Tell People What to Do Next

Every page should have an obvious next step. Call. Email. Get a quote. Book a time.

One clear action per page beats five competing ones. Make it a real button, and make it the loudest thing on the screen.

5. Put Your Contact Info Where People Look

Phone number in the header. Address in the footer. Both on every single page.

I still find sites where the only way to reach the business is a form that goes nowhere. Don’t be that. Some people want to call you… let them.

That’s the List

Nothing on it is expensive or fancy. It’s just the stuff that gets skipped when everybody’s arguing about the hero image.
