Google Changed the Rules This Summer. Here's What That Means for Your Website.

If your website hasn't been touched in a year or two, this summer's Google updates are not your friend. Two things happened in quick succession. Most small business owners have no idea about either one. First, Core Web Vitals. Google grades every site on three real-world measures: Load Time (LCP), Visual Stability (CLS), and Interaction Speed (INP). A slow, unstable page fails them, and that shows up in your rankings. Second, AI Overviews. Those are the AI-generated answer blocks that now sit at the top of most search results, and they don't just rank your page. They decide whether to cite it at all. A page can rank on page one and still get passed over if it isn't structured, fast, and authoritative enough to get pulled into the summary. That's a new problem. It didn't exist 18 months ago.

What does this mean for a local service business? A contractor, an architect, a plumber. It's straightforward. Slow sites are getting penalized harder than before, and static sites that haven't been updated in months are being treated as inactive. Google's freshness signal has always existed. Now it works alongside AI evaluation that looks at whether your content actually answers the questions your customers are searching. The businesses that show up this summer are the ones with fast-loading sites and regularly updated content that answers real questions in plain language. Not keyword-stuffed pages written for 2018. If you're not sure where your site stands right now, that's exactly the conversation we should have. Call me.
