The useful question is when the difference pays for itself. Sometimes it does. Sometimes a template is genuinely the smarter call, and I’ll tell a client that.
It’s Built Around How You Actually Work
A template is built for everybody, which means it’s built for nobody in particular.
If your business has an unusual shape, a quoting process, a service area that matters, a product that needs explaining before anyone buys, custom means the site is built for that instead of around it.
You Stop Looking Like Everyone Else
Popular templates are popular. Your competitor two towns over may be using the same one.
When you’ve spent years building a reputation, looking generic undercuts it. That’s hard to put a number on and easy to feel.
It’s Faster
This one is concrete.
A template ships with code for every feature it offers, including all the ones you don’t use. A custom build ships what your site actually needs and nothing else. Usually that’s the difference between a page that loads in four seconds and one that loads in under one.
Speed is a ranking factor and a bounce-rate factor. It shows up in real numbers.
Search Gets Built In, Not Bolted On
Page structure, headings, clean markup, sensible URLs. All decided while it’s being built, rather than patched afterward with a plugin.
It Can Do the Odd Thing
The specific calculator. The intake form that feeds your system. The thing nobody else needs.
With a template you eventually hit a wall and there’s nothing on the other side of it.
When I’d Say Don’t
Brand new and unsure what the business even looks like yet? Template. Get up, start learning, spend the money later when you know what you need.
Site is basically a business card and always will be? Template. Save your money.
But if the website is where your work comes from, custom usually pays for itself inside a year… and then keeps paying.
