Everybody’s writing about AI at work. Most of it is written by people who don’t use it much.
I use these tools every day to build websites. So here’s the ground-level version, which is less dramatic and more useful.
Nobody Got Replaced. Everybody Got Faster.
That’s the honest headline.
The work I do now takes a fraction of the time it did two years ago. The judgment about what to build and why, still mine. The typing, the boilerplate, the first draft of everything, much faster.
The people doing well with this aren’t the ones who automated their jobs away. They’re the ones who stopped doing the tedious 40% and spent that time on the part that actually needed a human.
The Barrier Is Basically Gone
No hardware. No install. A browser and twenty bucks a month.
That’s why this moved so fast compared to every previous technology shift. Your bookkeeper can use the same tool as an engineer at a large company. That has genuinely never been true before.
How You Ask Matters More Than People Expect
There’s a real skill here and it’s not technical.
Vague question, vague answer. Tell it who it’s for, what the constraints are, what good looks like, and give it an example… suddenly it’s useful.
It’s a lot like briefing a sharp new hire who has no context about your business. Everything you’d have to explain to them, you have to explain here.
What It’s Genuinely Good At
First drafts of anything. Summarizing long documents. Restructuring a mess into something organized. Explaining something you half-understand. Writing the tedious code nobody wants to write.
What It’s Still Bad At
Knowing what’s true. It will state a wrong thing with total confidence, which is the single most dangerous habit it has.
Knowing your business. Knowing what matters. Taste.
Anything where being wrong is expensive still needs a person checking it. That hasn’t changed and I don’t think it’s about to.
What I’d Tell a Business Owner
Pick one thing you do every week that you resent. Try it there for a month. Don’t buy a strategy.
That’s it. The people getting value from this started small and boring, not with a transformation plan.
Want to talk about where it might fit in your business? Call me. I’ll tell you if the answer is nowhere.
