Getting the Most Value Out of Your Website

A brass balance scale, one pan holding coins and the other a small glowing cyan cube.

You already paid for the website. The question is whether it’s earning anything.

Most of the ones I look at are sitting at maybe half of what they could do, and the fixes are not dramatic. Three things.

Make It Fast

Speed is the one that quietly costs you the most, because you never see who left.

The usual culprits are the same every time. Enormous photos uploaded straight off a camera. A pile of plugins each dragging in its own code. Something loading a font from four places.

Run your site through Google’s PageSpeed Insights. It’s free and it’ll tell you exactly what’s slow. Half the time it’s images, and half of that is one image somebody dropped in at full size two years ago.

Make It Easy

Watch somebody who’s never seen your site try to find your phone number. It’s uncomfortable and it’s the most useful ten minutes you’ll spend.

Menus should be boring and obvious. Every page should have one clear next step. White space is not wasted space… it’s what makes the important thing findable.

Make It Ask

A lot of sites explain beautifully and then never ask for anything.

Every page needs an obvious action. Call. Email. Get a quote. Pick one per page and make it the loudest thing there. Two competing buttons get fewer clicks than one, every time.

The Part Nobody Does

Then check it again in six months.

A website is not a thing you finish. Your prices change, your services change, the photo on the homepage is four years old and everybody in it has left. Twenty minutes a quarter keeps it honest.
